Spring is in the air and the Ticonderoga Area Farmers’ Market invites farmers and vendors (returning and new) to join them. The Market will operate on Saturdays from 10AM to 1PM from July 8th to October 14th at 1114 Wicker Street (Wicker Wood), near the Walmart entrance and across from Christopher Chevrolet Buick.

“If you produce a quality food product that is locally grown, farm raised or handmade featuring local materials, you may be interested in participating in the Farmers’ Market,” expressed June Curtis, Market Advisor.  “Farmers are required to grow 50% of the fruits and vegetables they offer. All products must be local (produced within a 100 mile radius of Ticonderoga including Vermont).  The Market welcomes vendors and artisans who offer original goods that complement farmers’ products. If you are hesitant to commit to the full season, a flexible schedule is readily offered to encourage participation.”

With three strong years of growth and development behind them, the Farmers’ Market management is reflecting on their recent successes and placing their energies in areas where they were both successful and not as successful. The goal is to make good better and better best, paving the way for continued progress. Application has been submitted to and authorization received from NYS Agriculture and Markets for FMNP (Farmers Market Nutrition Program) compliancy. The market is well equipped to open in early July.

“Consumers’ safety is always our highest priority, especially with the driveway running through the middle of the site”, stated Market Manager Carol Wood Ramundo. “In 2016 we installed a formal barrier system, providing a clear delineation between the vending area and the busy roadway. What an awesome improvement!  We found a permanent home for the Kids’ Zone activities, distanced from the traffic, in a nice open sunny area. Also, new signage made it easier for shoppers to find the market and locate parking. These enhancements position us well for another great season ahead.”

Plans are underway to introduce some new concepts for entertainment and kids’ activities.  Grants have been submitted and fundraising has begun for the 2017 season. The Town of Ticonderoga has again committed to support the market.

“We thank the Stewarts Holiday Match program for providing supplies for kids’ activities throughout the summer”, stated June Curtis.  “Nature Sculptures, Sun Catchers and Painted Pumpkins will be among several exciting projects planned in the Kids’ Zone. Another pending grant will support musical performances.  A full schedule of events for the 2017 market will be distributed as the summer nears.”

The Farmers’ Market is sponsored by the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce. Matt Courtright, the chamber’s Executive Director, is a passionate advocate. “It pleases me to see the market thrive”, offers Matt.  “When businesses, towns, organizations and individuals come together to support one another their strength is powerful and this strength builds incrementally over time.  It is our mission at the Chamber to initiate and provide programs, services, and leadership to enhance cooperation within the community to create a more vibrant economy. The Farmers Market is one such initiative that proves to us that our work is meaningful and makes a difference. We look forward with enthusiasm to another flourishing year at the Farmers’ Market in 2017. The market not only impacts the local economy but creates a community gathering location for residents and visitors. I would like to personally thank the Town of Ticonderoga and all of the sponsors of the 2016 Farmers Market. Without your support the market would not be possible. Your commitment to the market was invaluable in sustaining our success.”

2016 sponsors and supporters included the Town of Ticonderoga, International Paper Company, Geraw’s Ok Sanitary, Stewarts Shops, Essex County Arts Council, Creating Healthy Schools and Communities Program for Clinton & Essex County, Nadeau’s Farm & Garden Market, Cultural Arts Initiative, Carol & Rick Ramundo, and Christopher Chevrolet Buick.
